Journalling Workshop with Judith Polan

judith polan.png

Calligrapher and painter Judith Polan has been keeping illustrated nature journals for over 30 years. They range from diaries of flyfishing and birdwatching adventures in various parts of the world to daily nature observations of the surroundings at her home in Greenbrier County. The books serve as a record of the natural world and its many changes and also an inspiration for larger works such as finished paintings and illustrated maps.

Judith will show a selection of these pieces and talk about the subject matter and locations that brought them to life. This includes not only West Virginia but also New Zealand, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, the Bahamas and Christmas Island in the Pacific.

If you are a journaler or have thought about starting a journal, these beautiful examples will give you inspiration for your own projects.

The second part of her presentation will be focused on guiding fellow Master Naturalists on how to put together their own particular journals. Subjects discussed will include choosing a theme and a format, narrowing down subject matter, sources for supplies and materials, sketching and painting in the field, and possibilities for coverings and bindings. Attendees are asked to bring their own materials.
